GOALS
& OBJECTIVES:
Study the works
of Georgia O'Keefe with regard to color and principles of
design. Create a flower picture exploring the way O'Keefe
used colors (similar and opposite colors as contrast) ,
and composition (use of space).
|
|
PROCESS:
After studying
O'Keefes' flower series and looking closely at real and
pictures of flowers; the children made pencil drawings on
black construction paper. They covered their pencil lines
with white glue. When the glue dried, the children used
colored chalk to fill in the spaces.

Crayon
Engravings
4th & 5th Grades
Bay Haven Basics Plus
Sarasota, Florida USA
Art Teacher Dr. Marvin Grossman
|
|
|
GOALS
& OBJECTIVES:
From a large collection
of nature photography, have the students select a favorite
fish, bird or flower. The objective is to expose the students
to the details and encourage them to express as much of
the detail as possible in each drawing. The goal is freedom
from stereotypical views by closely observing individual
details.
|
PROCESS:
1. Preparing the Paper:
Ask the students to
cover their papers with crayon by pressing hard and covering
all of the paper. A heavy coat of wax crayon makes brighter
finished lines. Next, paint over the crayoned paper with black
tempera paint mixed with a little bit of dish soap such as
Ivory.
|
 |
|
2.
Creating the Drawings:
From a large collection
of nature photography featuring birds, fish and flowers, ask
the students to choose their favorite and draw their version
on a clean piece of sketch paper. When the drawings are completed,
the pictures may be transferred to the prepared paper by coloring
on the back of the original with yellow chalk. The yellow
chalk side is placed against the black tempera as the drawing
is retraced over the original lines. By carefully pressing
the pencil, the yellow chalk dust is left on the tempera,
like home made carbon paper.
|
3.
Scratching out the design and coloring:
Each student uses a nail to trace the chalk lines and scratch
out the design, revealing the variety of colors underneath
the black paint. As a further touch, students can elaborate
the designs within the drawing.. Finally, similar colors
of oil pastel or craypas are applied to make the main subject
stand out.
